The idea of Punjab Highway Patrol (PHP) was conceived by former Inspector General of Police Punjab Syed Masood Shah. Initially, 61 posts were operationalized on June 21, 2005. The basic idea was to rebuild a better and soft image of the police over rural highways across the province.

The principal objectives of PHP are:

  • Round the clock patrolling on highways
  • Crime prevention on highways
  • Eradication of highway robbery, dacoity, vehicle snatching and carjacking
  • Check the transportation of theft cattle & wood
  • Render the help to the commuters in emergency
  • Rescue work on road accidents
  • Reporting desk to report crime
  • Removal of encroachments on highways
  • Spread awareness in public for safety, security and self-protection
  • Reunion of lost abducted and astray children with their families
